Winners chosen in the September InterBoard Poetry Competition

Friday September 23, 2005
from Gina Bryson & Cherilyn Ferroggiaro, InterBoard Poetry Community Editors:
“With the announcement of this month’s winning poems, I’d like to say an extra ‘thank you’ to Sarah Crown of The Guardian for filling in for David Brinks. As many of you know, Dave Brinks owns a business in New Orleans and though we were told he is physically well, we have lost contact with him at this time. We hope all is well for him and the rest of that lovely city as they move toward restoration. Meanwhile, Sarah stood in for us as IBPC judge. Thank you, Sarah!

“I’d also like to mention a special thank you to Rus Bowden, editor of Poetry and Poets in Rags, for helping us make contact with Sarah. Rus wrote to many of the editors and folks he’s met through his weekly column of poetry news headlines regarding our sudden need for a substitute judge. Almost everyone inquired of was willing to step forward and help us out during this time... and if not able to help presently, they offered assistance in the future. Lovely to see poets, writers and editors working so well together for the cause of poetry. Times like this make me glad that I have access to a computer/internet and the ability to make contact with those in our circles of interest... even though not physically close, yet still so very accessible to one another. The sense of community is truly felt at this time.”

None of the poems selected by substitute judge Sarah Crown came from our Poetry Forum’s entries, but there are some very fine pieces among the winners, a selection of evocative autumn reading: “The Chewer” by Judy Goodwin, which crystallizes a complex relationship in one bite of a crisp fall apple; “Crone” by Catherine Rogers, tending the autumn garden of her life; “Two Days with My Father,” by Ashura, a poem which encompasses the seasons of childhood & the death of a parent; plus a cornucopia of honorable mentions. Enjoy!
